What the Scholarship Covers

Benefit Detail
Monthly Allowance UG/Kosen: 117,000 ¥  |  Master's: 144,000 ¥  |  PhD: 145,000 ¥ (+ up to 3,000 ¥ regional supplement)
Tuition & Fees Entrance exam, matriculation, and all tuition fees paid by MEXT
Flight to Japan Economy class ticket provided upon arrival within specified period
Flight home Economy class ticket upon graduation and return within scholarship end date
Accommodation ❌ Not covered — must be borne by the grantee
💰 Bring at least USD 2,000 The first scholarship payment is made 1–1.5 months after arrival. Scholars are strongly advised to bring a minimum of US$2,000 to cover immediate expenses upon arriving in Japan.

Master's & PhD:

Any field you majored in at university (or a related field) that can be studied/researched at a Japanese graduate school. Traditional performing arts and factory-based practical training are excluded.

Important Notes & Conditions

🚫 Non-Eligibility Conditions (any one = disqualified) Military personnel or civilian military employees · Previous MEXT scholarship recipients (including those who withdrew) · Currently enrolled or planning to enrol in a Japanese institution as a private international student during the application period
⚠️ UG/Kosen — Preparatory Course Warning If you fail to complete the 1-year preparatory Japanese language course, or cannot enter the designated university/Kosen after completion, your scholarship will be cancelled and you must return to Sri Lanka.
ℹ️ Key Rules for All Schemes You may apply for one scheme only. Once selected, changing your field or transferring institutions is not permitted. Declining an offer after selection means you will not be considered for any Ministry scholarship in future. Scholarship extensions will not be recommended.

Applications are online only — no postal submissions. Submit through the official Ministry portal. You may apply for one scheme only. Government sector employees must route their applications through their institution's Head.
