For Sri Lankan educators and language enthusiasts, the BA in English and English Language Teaching at the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) represents one of the most flexible, career-aligned degree programmes available in the country. With the 2026/2027 intake now open, this is a timely opportunity to invest seriously in your academic and professional future — whether you are a practicing teacher looking to formalise your credentials or a student with a passion for the English language and its teaching.

"Designed specifically for students and teachers who wish to strengthen their academic and professional qualifications in English Language and English Language Teaching."

What Is This Degree Programme?

The BA in English and English Language Teaching is a four-year honours-level degree conducted entirely in English and offered through the Department of Language Studies at OUSL. Unlike traditional residential university programmes, OUSL's open and distance learning model makes it especially suitable for working teachers who cannot step away from their current responsibilities. The flexible structure allows you to study around your professional commitments while earning a nationally and internationally recognised degree.

The programme is structured to develop both linguistic competence and pedagogical expertise. Students will engage with subjects spanning English literature, applied linguistics, language acquisition theory, curriculum design, and classroom methodology — building a rounded understanding of both the language itself and the best practices for teaching it.

Who Should Apply?

This programme is a strong fit if you are a National College of Education (NCOE) graduate who trained in English language teaching, a school teacher currently working in the ESL classroom, a holder of the OUSL Diploma in English Language & Literature, or a student who has completed A/L examinations with English Literature among your subjects. The programme welcomes anyone committed to English education — at any career stage.

Admission Requirements

Applicants are required to satisfy at least one of the following four criteria:

  • 01 Possess the OUSL Diploma in English Language & Literature (an application is required to register under this category).
  • 02 Hold a Diploma in Teaching English (ESL) of two years' duration from a National College of Education (NCOE).
  • 03 Possess any other recognised two-year Teacher Training Qualification in Teaching English as a Second Language, acceptable to the OUSL Senate.
  • 04 Have passes in three subjects at the G.C.E. (A/L) Examination — including English Literature — or an equivalent qualification.
Applicants qualifying under Category 01 (OUSL Diploma holders) are exempt from the selection test. All other applicants must sit and pass the test to be considered.

Selection Test Details

Applicants who qualify under categories 2, 3, or 4 are required to sit a selection test administered by the Department of Language Studies. This examination assesses your English proficiency and suitability for degree-level study in the medium of English. Here are all the details you need:

Why Study English Language Teaching at OUSL?

The OUSL has been Sri Lanka's leader in open and distance education for decades. Its degrees are fully recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and hold strong standing in both public and private sector employment. For teachers in particular, holding a bachelor's degree in your subject specialisation is increasingly essential for career advancement — whether in government schools, international schools, private tutoring, or moving into lecturing and teacher education.

The English Language Teaching job market in Sri Lanka — and globally — continues to place premium value on teachers with formal higher education qualifications. Graduates of this programme are well-positioned for roles as school teachers, private tutors, language trainers, curriculum writers, and entry-level lecturers, and are also prepared for postgraduate study in applied linguistics or TESOL abroad.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to attend classes on campus?
OUSL follows an open and distance learning model. Study materials are delivered to you, and while there may be occasional on-site sessions or tutorials at Regional Centres, the programme is designed so that working professionals can study without leaving their jobs. Check the OUSL course page for the latest details on contact sessions.
Can I apply if I completed A/Ls without English Literature?
No. Under Category 04, English Literature must be one of the three A/L passes. If you don't have English Literature at A/L, you would need to qualify under one of the other three admission categories — such as holding an NCOE Diploma in Teaching English (ESL).
Is this degree recognised for government teacher salary increments?
OUSL degrees are recognised by the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka. However, for specific government service salary or grade implications, it is best to confirm directly with the Ministry of Education or your provincial education authority, as entitlements may vary by service category.
What happens if I fail the selection test?
Applicants who do not pass the selection test will not be eligible for admission in the current intake. You may reapply in a future intake once the next application window opens. There is no limit to the number of times you may attempt the selection test across different intakes.
What is the application deadline?
The official application closing date has not been specified in the announcement. Visit the OUSL official website or the course page linked above for current deadline information, as these can change. Apply as early as possible to avoid missing out.
