This revision has been issued with reference to Ministry of Education Circular No. 16/2017 and Circular No. ED/04/60/01/5.5/2017. The new rates apply to all eligible principals serving in permanent posts across all school categories — effective 01 April 2026.

Rs. 1,500 Increase per month
4 School categories covered
01.04.2026 Effective date
3 Grades of service eligible

Background: Why Was This Revision Made?

As part of the 2026 Budget Proposals, the Government of Sri Lanka pledged to improve the financial well-being of school principals — recognising the pivotal role they play in shaping the quality of education at the school level. Chapter 33.9 of the budget specifically addressed the revision of the special allowance for principals in permanent posts.

The previous allowance rates, introduced under the 2017 circular framework, had remained unchanged for several years. The Rs. 1,500 increase across all school categories reflects the government's commitment to keeping educators' compensation aligned with the cost of living and the demands of school leadership.

"The Rs. 1,500 increase applies uniformly across all four school categories — a recognition that every principal, from the largest 1AB school to the smallest Type 3 institution, contributes equally to Sri Lanka's educational mission."
