University Admission 2025/2026: GCE O/L Minimum Requirements for Every Degree Program
Your Z-Score Won't Save You If You Fail the O/L Check.
Sri Lankan university admission isn't just about your Z-score. Hundreds of applicants are rejected every year for missing a mandatory G.C.E. O/L grade — often a subject they didn't realise was required. This is the complete, UGC-approved checklist for every major degree programme.
Every August, thousands of A/L students across Sri Lanka eagerly submit their university applications — confident their Z-scores will carry them through. But a significant number receive rejection letters not because of their A/L results, but because they didn't meet a G.C.E. O/L minimum requirement for their chosen degree. A missing Grade C in Mathematics, a forgotten Grade S in English — these small gaps can close the door to your dream programme entirely.
This guide compiles every mandatory G.C.E. (O/L) requirement for university degree programmes under the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the 2025/2026 admissions cycle. Bookmark it, share it, and use it before you finalise your application.
How to Read This Guide
Each programme lists the specific O/L subjects and the minimum grade required. The UGC recognises three threshold grades in this context:
If a programme requires English — C, a simple pass (S) in English will not be accepted. You must have achieved at least a Credit pass. Read each row carefully.

Key Patterns Every Student Should Know
English is Almost Universal
Nearly every degree programme on this list requires at minimum a Simple Pass (S) in English at O/L. Programmes in technology, management, science, and health sciences typically require a stronger Credit Pass (C). If you are aiming for Town & Country Planning or Translation Studies, note that a Merit Pass (B) in English is required — a bar significantly higher than most other programmes.
Mathematics is Mandatory for Technical and Business Paths
If you are applying for any ICT, Engineering, Architecture, Business, or Management-related programme, you will almost certainly need at least a Credit in Mathematics. The sole exception in this list is Arts — Information Technology, which also requires a Maths Credit despite its Arts faculty classification — a fact that surprises many applicants every year.
Science Requirements Are Selective
A Credit in Science is mandatory for programmes like Facilities Management, Fashion Design & Product Development, Food Business Management, and Primary Education. Interestingly, Quantity Surveying only requires a Simple Pass (S) in Science — so don't over-interpret the requirement; read each row precisely.
Management & IT (MIT) Sets the Highest Maths Bar
Among all programmes on this list, Management & Information Technology (MIT) demands the highest Mathematics grade — a Merit (B). Similarly, Translation Studies is unique in requiring Merit-level passes across three languages: English, Sinhala, and Tamil simultaneously.
FAQ: O/L Requirements & University Admission
You will be disqualified from that specific programme. The UGC treats O/L prerequisites as mandatory filters — no exceptions are granted for high Z-scores. Always verify your O/L grades against the requirements before listing a programme as your first or second choice.
Yes. If you repeated your O/L examination and improved a grade, you may submit those results. What matters is that you hold the required grade — not when you achieved it. Ensure you submit a Certified Copy of the relevant results sheet.
This list covers the G.C.E. (O/L) minimum requirements as per the UGC guidelines for 2025/2026. Some universities may impose additional internal requirements or interview processes. Always check the specific university's prospectus alongside this guide.
Yes. Even for competitive science-stream programmes like medicine and engineering, applicants must have passed their O/L with the appropriate grades in core subjects. Confirm the exact requirements for your target programme via the UGC official website or the university's admissions office.
Certified Copies of G.C.E. (O/L) results can be obtained from the Department of Examinations Sri Lanka. These must be officially stamped and signed — photocopies or self-certified copies are not accepted by universities.
This list is based on the UGC gazette for 2025/2026. While it covers the vast majority of programmes, a small number of specialised programmes may have additional requirements. We recommend cross-referencing with your specific university's admission booklet for complete accuracy.
Your Pre-Application O/L Checklist
Before submitting your university application, run through this checklist:
✦ Identify your top 3 degree programme choices
✦ Look up each programme's O/L requirements in the table above
✦ Verify your O/L result sheet for each required subject and grade
✦ If you sat O/L more than once, confirm which sitting has your best grades
✦ Obtain Certified Copies from the Department of Examinations for submission
✦ Do not attach original O/L certificates — Certified Copies only
✦ Check the university prospectus for any additional programme-specific requirements
✦ Submit your application before the deadline — late applications are not considered
