Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education Harini Amarasuriya confirmed in Parliament today that state university admissions for the Academic Year 2025/2026 will commence in the first week of September 2026 — with 42,937 students expected to secure placements.

Speaking in Parliament on 6 May 2026, Prime Minister Amarasuriya said that following the release of university cut-off marks, all student registration lists will be forwarded to the respective universities by 31 August 2026. The exact dates for the commencement of courses will be determined individually by each university.
