Government warns against fraudulent agents targeting top A/L scholarship applicants
The Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education has issued an urgent advisory: fraudulent agents are actively targeting high-achieving Advanced Level students with false promises linked to the government's prestigious overseas scholarship scheme — and strict legal action will follow.
About the scholarship programme
Under the "Rich Country – Beautiful Life" policy framework and the 2025 national budget, the Sri Lankan government has established a scholarship scheme to send 200 of the country's highest-ranking A/L students to internationally recognised universities for undergraduate studies. The programme is fully administered by the Ministry — with no private involvement whatsoever.
What the Ministry has made clear
- No third-party involvement The Ministry has no partnership, agreement, or arrangement with any private institution, consultancy, or individual representative — under any circumstances.
- No middlemen required Students do not need — and should not pay — any agent or intermediary to submit their application. The process is entirely direct.
- Zero Ministry liability for third-party dealings If you pay or engage with an unauthorized agent, the Ministry will not be responsible for any loss, harm, or missed opportunity that results.
- Legal action will be taken Individuals or institutions spreading misinformation or attempting to defraud the public regarding this programme face strict legal consequences under Sri Lankan law.
"Students and parents should rely only on official government announcements. The entire process — application preparation, recommendations, and final candidate selection — is handled exclusively by the Ministry."
How legitimate selection works
- Direct application only All applications are submitted through official government channels — no third-party platforms or portals.
- Strictly merit-based Candidates are evaluated on academic performance and skill alone — no agent can influence or guarantee selection.
- Fully transparent process Recommendations and final selections are made internally by the Ministry with no external interference.
- Official announcements only All genuine updates will come directly from the Ministry — follow TeachMore to receive verified alerts instantly.
What students and parents should do now
If you have been approached by someone claiming to represent or facilitate this scholarship programme on behalf of the government, do not share personal information, do not make any payment, and report the incident to the nearest police station or the Ministry directly.
Genuine scholarship recipients will be selected solely on the basis of their A/L results. No agent, consultant, or private service can increase your chances — and paying one will only put you at financial and legal risk.
